GeysirGal months ago Which union is the best and is it worth joining one? I was wondering what others on here think about unions, and which one is the best to join, as I have been thinking about it for a while - not because of any particular problems, but just because it seems a good thing to do.
I work as a housekeeper for a large chain of care homes not the NHS , and have done a little research. Unite charge slightly more but are of course a much bigger union, so in theory at least should have more resources - their helpline for one thing is open longer hours, and at the weekends, which as I work weekends may be important. Until a few years ago my employer had a collective agreement with them, but this was sadly scrapped.
I am not aware of any of my colleagues being Unite members, but I know of at least 2 who are with GMB, and both of them said the union had helped them with various things. I am then torn between the two, and wondered if there was anyone on here that had experience of such things and may be able to share their views. Yes they can offer good advice should employment issues arise, however you can probably get the same good advice via other sources such as ACAS.
GeysirGal months ago There seems to be a mixed reaction so far, which I guess is to be expected. While it is true that Unison do also cater for the healthcare sector, I thought they were predominantly for civil servants. Since I am not a civil servant I did then think that they would be the best choice. Do correct me though if I am wrong. My daughter works for UNITE, and they seem ok employers, but she has absolutely no intention of becoming a member, not that she could. How ridiculous would that be, being a member of the same union that employs you?
Not only are they the most vocal they are the most supportive. Become a member. Yes please, I would like to receive the GMB newsletter and updates. No thanks, I do not want to receive the GMB newsletter and updates.
