Why do utahns dropout of school
Youngsters who are having problems in school and know the law does not require them to be there would be much more likely simply to drop out. It's too big a risk. Many factors contribute to junior high students misbehaving.
School curricula often don't provide adequate provisions for minority students whose first language isn't English. Students may be having family problems, or simply a lack of maturity at age 14 or Low-income and minority children face many obstacles that make learning difficult. Whatever the problem, making it easier for such students to leave school isn't the answer.
Alternative school programs, counseling or tutoring may help get the student through a rough time and keep him or her in school. Once a year-old leaves school, there would be little chance to return and make up extensive course work needed for an equivalency degree. At 14, what activities would be open to a dropout? Employment wouldn't be an option. Gang membership and criminal activity would probably be the most appealing alternatives.
Leaving school at such a young age would virtually ensure that the dropout would never be able to earn a livable wage. Relieving the school of responsibility for young teenagers may only put the burden on society at other levels - law enforcement, welfare organizations and prisons. Utah's dedicated educators don't want to lose the chance to help needy students. Lily Eskelsen, who leads the state's largest organization of teachers, does not support Stephenson's bill.
